Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital and the physician responsible for this site.
His work on this subject runs from prevention through to the decision about an operation. He assesses what makes an infection more likely, sets the standards for wound care and for follow-up, and is the clinician who decides whether a wound that is red is healing or infected. That decision is made on direction and speed rather than on appearance, which is why he asks a patient where the margin of redness was an hour ago rather than how red the area looks. Where sampling will change the treatment he takes it before an antibiotic is started, and where an implant is involved he plans on a different set of rules, because tissue with no blood supply of its own does not respond in the same way as a wound.
Clinical focus
The margin is the finding
Redness at a wound edge is what healing looks like as well as what infection looks like, so its presence tells you nothing by itself. What tells you something is whether the edge of that redness has moved since you last looked. A mark on the skin and the time written down is the smallest and most useful piece of information in this whole subject.
